In Arkansas Teacher Retirement, ATRS or the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System has a major role to play. In fact, the Arkansas Teacher Retirement System has been working towards providing retirement benefits to the employees of public schools of Arkansas. In Arkansas, teachers under age 65 have restrictions to return back to employment in a position listed by the system within 30 days of their retirement. In that case, their retirement would be rejected. The list of the positions include any part-time or full time employment with any public school in Arkansas, any state agency related to education, post-secondary institution, college, and university.

Age and Service

In Arkansas teacher retirement, the retirement benefits are available if you have service credit of 28 years or more. However, you can get reduced benefit if you have service credit of 25 to 27 years. You will also be entitled for retirement benefit if you are at least 60 years old and have 5 to 24 years of service credit.


Disability benefits are also available in Arkansas teacher retirement. The eligibility criteria for disability benefits are as below:

  • You should be an active member, having 5 or more years of service credit.
  • A written application.
  • A medical committee will certify the physical or mentally incapability.


In Arkansas teacher retirement, spouse and dependent children of an active member are entitled to survivor benefits. Spouse would get the benefit from the following month of the death of the member if the member had:

  • attained an age of 60 years, or
  • had 28 or more years of service credit, or
  • had 25 to 27.5 years of service credit (in that case, the retirement benefit would be reduced)

Each of the surviving dependent children will get an annuity equal to 20 percent of the highest salary of the member. If there are more than three surviving dependent children, 60 percent of the member’s highest salary would be divided equally.
