Retirement communities in U.S. signify a broader term which consists of various types of housing estates and lodging centers for the aged and the senior citizens. They are specially designed for these people who are no longer involved in work or are over a particular age limit. Retirement communities should not be confused with retirement homes which consist of single buildings or small complexes where there is no chance to mix or socialize. In contrast, retirement communities are made for the purpose of socializing and mixing among the senior citizens.
Most of the retirement communities in United States consist of large areas which include swimming pools, club houses, art houses, golf courses, on site medical centers, lakes for boating and lots more. In fact the senior citizens who stay in these places can experience luxury and comfort of a high degree. Retirement communities are also known as ‘Active Adult Communities”.
In the U.S, retirement communities comprise three categories:
Active Communities: They mostly consist of residential units with no long term health benefits. These communities are ideal for retired persons as well as for those who are nearing their age of retirement.
Active/ Supportive Communities: They are also known as continuing care retirement communities”. In these communities, residential and health care benefits are combined to give the people utmost satisfaction.
Supportive: Supportive communities offer health benefits like assisted living centers, nursing homes and other treatment places. These types of communities provide a greater scope of care and also allow the people to maintain some sort of freedom.
