Overview
South Carolina, a southern state in the US, is as well known for its beaches as for its gardens. Stretching from Myrtle Beach southward to Charleston and Hilton Head, this is one of the most preferred retirement areas in the US. If you choose a retirement home in South Carolina, you will enjoy two colorful seasons every year – spring and fall. Spring also brings with it a lot of festivals, including the Lowcountry Shrimp Festival and the Come-See-Me Festival.
There are plenty of outdoor activities for you if you are a senior in South Carolina, especially if you love being near water. We know you will want to spend a lot of time on the white sand beaches of the state, especially Myrtle Beach. But, the lakes of South Carolina, including Lake Murray and Lake Marion, also give you the opportunity to spend many lazy hours fishing for trout, catfish and bass. You can also go canoeing or kayaking on rivers like the Congaree or the Edisto. The mountain terrain and white water in the Up Country also provide exciting times for the adventurous.
If you relocate to South Carolina after retirement, you will find that the state also gives you a lot in terms of art and culture. The Hard Rock Park, which has just come up in Myrtle Beach, is unique in the world for becoming the first amusement park built on the theme of music. The park will eventually have over 40 attractions, including a huge amphitheater for live performances.
Besides the music theme park, you could also visit the Old Slave Mart Museum and Benjamin May’s Historic Site (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was greatly influenced by Dr. Benjamin May). The Museum of Confederate History will give you more than a glimpse into the historical War Between the States.
As a senior who appreciates good food, you will find South Carolina perfect for you. There are dedicated food festivals like the Ware Shoals Catfish Festival where you can taste the region’s famous cuisine including fried catfish plates, barbecued chicken, oyster roasts and Frogmore stew.
South Carolina, also known as the Palmetto State, has a good network of roads and passenger routes. There are also six major airports in the state, including the Greenville/Spartanburg International Airport.
There are many retirement homes in South Carolina. Some of the most popular places in this American state where retirees settle the most include Myrtle Beach for its golf and sunny coastline, Charleston, and Hilton Head for golf courses, scenic beaches and emerald forests.
