The Importance of Mental Health

The importance of mental health increases with age: because it is often the root cause of most physiological problems. As the human body ages, it undergoes various physiological and emotional changes. Time takes a toll on the organs and systems in the body, as it becomes less efficient due to inactivity and age-related issues. The brain is affected too, with the number of cells (neurons) in the brain reducing with age. Reflexes tend to become slower and people also become less coordinated.

But, all is not lost, just because you are stepping into the second half of your life. Research shows that proper exercise and healthy eating can slow down the effects of aging and help you stay fit mentally well after retirement. Psychiatrist John Ratey has explored the potential benefits of aerobic exercise on anxiety, stress, depression, learning and aging, in "Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain". Symptoms of depression have also been found to be reduced by aerobic exercise and adequate social activities.

Enjoy life and make it a point to stay active and healthy. Beat old age depression and post retirement stress through mental exercises. In fact "mental exercises" like solving puzzles, playing games like scrabble, playing number games like sudoko and kakuro are advisable for people of all ages. Be a "smart" adult. At the same time, "staying in touch" is great way to keep conditions like depression at bay. Make sure that you stay in touch with your family and friends. Join social groups that let you remain active and enjoy the company of others, at the same time. You can also join lifelong learning programs.
