Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

You can automatically get a Medicare Part A benefit beginning from the day you turn 65, if you already get benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB). For those of you under 65 and with some disability, you will get Part A after you get disability benefits from Social Security or Railway retirement Board for 24 months. You will receive a Medicare card 3 months before your 65th birthday or on your 35th month of disability benefits.

When can you enroll for Medicare Part A-Hospital Insurance?

You can buy Medicare Part A during the initial enrollment period beginning 3 months before your 65th birthday and ending 3 months after your 65th birthday, if you are not eligible for premium-free Part A.

You can also buy it from January 1 to March 31 every year. Opt for special enrollment if you have group health coverage through your own or your spouse’s employer or union.
