Calle Alcala: The Madrid bullfighting ring of Calle Alcala is located on one of Madrid's busiest thoroughfares. Bullfighting is an inextricable part of Spanish history and its cultural identity. If you are an aficionado, or merely curious about bullfighting, then you can enjoy an afternoon of the sport. Calle Alcala has its own Metro station, Ventas. There are regular bus services to Calle Alcala and the taxi fares from downtown ride are moderate. Calle Alcala with its abundant shops offers everything from shoes, and accessories, to clothes, gifts and souvenirs.
Centro de Arte Reina Sofia: Recognised as an important museum housing contemporary art, the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia was inaugurated by King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Sofia in 1992. A decisive milestone in the reputation of this museum was the transfer of Picasso's "Guernica" here. Besides Picasso, the works of famous artists like, Dali, Miró, Schnabel, Numan, Bacon and others are also kept here. The collections are divided over two floors, one for pre-1939 works and the other for post.
Museo Sorolla: This was the home of the Valencian artist, Joaquin Sorolla, which has been restored to its original elegance. You can see the great artist's stylistic and thematic periods and develop an understanding of his evolution through the family portraits he painted; his self portraits, the social criticisms, his costumbrist works and above all the Impressionist landscapes.
Corral de la Moriera is rated as the best flamenco restaurant in Madrid. Inaugurated in 1957, the restaurant is flashy and colorful like the flamenco and is steeped in tradition. The first rate performance of the dancers as well as the chefs, make each night an event to be remembered.
The Prado is a treasure house of the finest collection of European art, ranging from the 12th to the early 19th century. It houses more than 8,600 paintings by El Greco, Murillo, Goya, Ruben, Bosch, Raphael, Titian, Boticelli and Fra Angelico. The famous painting, Las Meninas, by Velazquez is also kept here.
