Following are listed few aromatherapy essential oils and their uses-
Lemon:
Scent: Lemon oil is mainly extracted from the freshly cut peels and has a sharp, citrus smell. It is a top note oil.
Color: It is pale yellow or deep yellow in color.
Properties: It has antiseptic, antiviral, astringent and stimulating properties.
Uses: Lemon essential oil is a good remedy for hypertension and high blood pressure, circulatory problems, migraine, sinusitis, sore throat , tonsillitis, rheumatism, varicose veins and constipation. It is a useful counter for bacterial and viral infections.
Skin care: It is also useful in treating athlete's foot, cellulite and dry skin.
Emotional attributes: It is an anti-depressant.
Makes good combinations with: Lavender, Chamomile and Ylang Ylang.
Caution: Do not inhale it directly and since it increases skin reactions to sunlight , do not use it when you are going to be exposed to sunlight.
Peppermint
Scent: The oil is extracted from the leaves and has a fresh, strong, menthol smell. It is a top-note oil.
Color: It is clear with a tinge of yellow.
Properties: It has antiseptic, astringent, digestive, pain-reliving and decongestant properties.
Uses: It is effective in treating asthma, bronchitis, colic pain, indigestion, muscle and joint pains, sore feet and nausea. It also relieves headaches, migraines, sinusitis and toothaches
Skin care: Peppermint oil reduces itching from scabies and poison oak. It also stimulates oil production of the skin.
Emotional attributes: It counters insomnia and mental fatigue.
Makes good combinations with: Lavender, Rosemary and Eucalyptus.
Caution: Pregnant women and epileptics should avoid this oil. Also avoid in cardiac fibrillation.
Rosemary
Scent: The essential oil is extracted from the leaves and has a woody and herbal smell. It is a middle note oil.
Color: It is clear in color.
Properties: It has antidepressant, pain-reliving, anti-rheumatic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, decongestant and stimulating properties.
Uses: It is used to treat muscle pain, rheumatism, gout, poor circulation, liver and gall bladder problems, indigestion, cough and cold.
Skin care: It is used to prevent hair loss and dandruff. It can also work on cellulite.
Emotional attributes: It decrease fatigue and depression and increases mental concentration and retention power of the memory
Makes good combinations with: Geranium, Juniper and Cedar wood.
Caution: If you have epilepsy or high blood pressure, do not use rosemary oil.
Tea tree oil
Scent:Tea tree oil is extracted from the leaves and has a fresh, medicinal smell. It is a middle note oil.
Color:It is pale yellow in color or nearly clear colored.
Properties: It has antiseptic, anti fungal, antiviral, detoxifying, antibiotic and stimulating properties.
Uses: It is useful in countering fungal, viral and urinary tract infections. It is used in cuts, boils and burns .It is also an immune system booster.
Skin care: It is beneficial in treating many skin conditions like age spots, athlete's foot, yeast infections, insect bites, corn, dandruff, acne and sun burn.
Emotional attributes: The oil has a stimulating effect.
Caution: Prolonged use may cause skin irritations.
