Is your car fit enough for driving safely?

Today, most cars in the US come with many adjustable features that might prove helpful for older drivers if they're used properly. Safety and comfort have become the main focus of most car manufacturers designing cars for senior citizens. Besides fitting in your budget, you and your car should "understand" and complement each other. Here are some of the things to look out for while investing in a car:

  • You can adjust your outside and inside rear view mirrors to reduce blind spots to a great extent. Set the interior mirror in such a way that it shows you the rear window to the maximum. Adjust the left side-view mirror by leaning your head against the left window so you can see the rear side of your car. Position your head above the center console in the middle of the car and now adjust the right-side mirror so you are able to see only the rear side. Adjust the left mirror similarly so you are able to see the back of the car.
  • Adjust your seat in a way that you will have no difficulty in reaching the gas paddle and the break. You should be at least 3 inches above the steering.
  • For the air bag to set up properly, remember to position yourself in such a way that you are approx. 10 to 12 inches away from the steering wheel.
  • Remember to always buckle up and place the lower part of your seat belt across your hips, not your abdomen.
  • You can also use add-ons like pads and pedal extensions to raise your seat height, a handybar to make getting in and out of your car smoother, and an "easy reach seat belt handle" to ensure you can reach the seat belt without pulling a muscle.
